Thanks, Rockpile!
Sorry, the Tumbler reference is probably the most “inside baseball” of all of them...
Jesse White is an elderly Chicago politician who started a performance group, “Jesse White’s Tumblers” many years ago. Back in the 70s, I think. Teenagers from bad neighborhoods who perform gymnastics in parades and such. Keeps them out of gangs, keeps them on the straight and narrow. I don’t know much about them, but they’re fine...
Anyway, he was a state rep for many years, and then his popularity propelled him to three or four terms now as our statewide Secretary of State.
He’s a typical garden-variety liberal on the issues, maybe more honest than most, but still, a leftist... but the voters keep on electing him without even thinking about issues; he’s just “that great guy with the Jesse White Tumblers.”
Since a lot of my readers think of Tumblr for social media, I figured it might be a fitting closure for this piece, but it’s probably too inside-baseball.
Incumbents always have the advantage.
Here in Texas the Democrat machine was all powerful until the Carter-Reagan years and the Republicans really started gaining ground.
Texas has plenty of corrupt pols I reckon but they seem like minor leaguers next to your guys.
