I bought some nice hybrid bulbs from Sam's Club. The CFL bulb is inside a glass envelope that looks very much like an ordinary incandescent bulb. Further, there is a small halogen incandescent bulb inside for instant on brightness, and the halogen bulb warms up the fluorescent bulb faster. after about 15 seconds the halogen bulb kicks out, and the fluorescent bulb is at full brightness.

Of course, the drawback is that they are 5 bucks apiece.

Yes, but what about the cost? Why FORCE people to pay so much more?

That sounds like the logic behind a hybrid car: “Let’s carry TWO propulsion systems (motor AND ICE) and TWO energy storage systems (gas tank AND batteries). That’ll reduce mass and capital cost.

Liberal logic.
