I am asking for prayers for my oldest brother, and the patriarch of our family since the death of our father many years ago.
I just returned home from two days visiting my brother, RMC(SS) Douglas A. Wright, USN (Retired), in the hospital where he is dying from COPD.
Growing up, he was always my mentor. He is the one who took me to see the Navy Recruiter in 1969, when I quit HS at 17. During the 10 years of my service, we served in the same location several times, and I had a standing invitation to join him and his family for dinner.
In January, he was admitted to the hospital in Northern California. He was in the hospital on his 70th birthday in February. The doctors didn't expect him to make it to his 49th wedding anniversary, which was yesterday.
Last month he was given a trachea tube, and the respirator has been doing his breathing for him since.
When I arrived on Sunday, my nephew picked me up at the airport and took me directly to the hospital.
I spent all day yesterday with him, his wife and my nephew's family, and we celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. The nurses in the ICU got together and presented his wife a small cake to celebrate with.
All during the day yesterday, I spent the time with him, and called all of our brothers and sisters that I could get ahold of, so they could tell their brother "good-bye".
I had my laptop and used it to view with him some pictures our cousin posted on the web, of him in the 40s, 50s, 60s and some up into the 80s.
I got to show him pictures of my daughter and grandchildren.
I caught the return flight home this morning, completely drained, emotionally and physically.
I am asking the prayer warriors to remember my brother. Pray that when they remove the respirator in a day or two, and let nature take its course, that he'll pass quickly and peacefully into the hands of God.
Thank you all.
I remember how Doug came over to our house in 1969. After I quit HS and he sat me down at the kitchen table, and we talked for a couple of hours. The next day he took me down to see the Navy recruiter, and I got the forms for the old man to sign, so I could enlist at 17. A few weeks later, I was on my way to boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. Then, some months later, after I finished boot camp and was sent to “A” school, and Doug and Merle were also at Bainbridge, MD. I used to go to the riding stables on my time off, and then went from the stables to their house for dinner. Merle complained about me coming straight from the stables and smelling of horses. :) .... Then, years later when we were both stationed in the Philippines at the same time. Doug was always there for me, as a mentor, and as a friend.

Prayers for your brother and your family.
I have personal troubles and difficulties that your comment has just made seem tiny and insignificant. I am praying that your suffering is eased and that you may also be strengthened so you can bravely face your own personal journey into that undiscovered country. The sadness of our earthy separation from those we love will be temporary but our joy when we are all reunited will be eternal if we trust in our Lord Jesus Christ.
God Bless you and strengthen your family.
