Credit card companies will rarely ever contact you in this manner. The security models they rely on do not require you to download anything.
Delete and forget
” Please download the attached file”
Scam.
Ignore it.
Send me your card number and I can check this out.
it is not from American Express, it is a virus. Do not do anyhting except delete it.
Absolutely Not! American Express will never send you anything like that. If they contact you they’ll give you the information. “We’re calling about your card ending I 12345. Did you order flowers from a shop in Shanghai?” (That happened to me.) You say no, and they’ll say, “We’ll handle it.” They may or may not send you a new card.
Do not, under any circumstances, download that file.
The email is legit. By the way, I am a Nigerian prince currently looking for an American friend who is willing to let me transfer my 5,000,000 USD to their bank account so I can safely flee my country. If you’re interested in helping me, please send me your bank account information in a PM.
Thanks!

Glad you did not bite on the oldest trick in the book. No real company would ever ask for such by an email.
For some reason, most of the ones I get are pretending to be from my isp - Century Link.
The grammatical errors (”you account”) and stilted English (”we had to believe”) are dead giveaways of phishing. Don’t click!!
>Dear American Express Member
Real notices will at least address you by name.
This phish is absolutely rancid and very typical in content.
I would definately ignore......sometime tomorrow or the next day, call in an talk to an “agent” or “representative” to see if there is any real problem....
All your base are belong to us.
Do NOT do anything from an email. Call American Express directly. That will answer all of your questions
Only a fool would respond to an email.
They’re trying to get personal info out of you. IGNORE IT.
