Hooves can rip bellies open. A healthy female moose can fend off a pack of wolves until they decide to seek a weaker prey.

I wouldn’t have waited for those slashing hooves to make deadly contact first. The encounter was tragic in its way but the moose was determined (”stubborn & silly”) to attack. Nature is red in tooth and claw.

Would have at least made sure the animal was dead before proceeding, though.

Yes, and smash skulls and break bones.

People have been killed by Moose. They can be very dangerous.

People who have not spent much time around large animals can easily underestimate the danger. Lots of people killed and maimed by horses as well.
