If the shoe fits

There's a shoe in there, somewhere?

I can’t help wondering how many of the “late filers” are actually anti-gunners whose filings were done as a curtesy by some helpful pro gun person.

If the shoe fits, wear it

Meaning

If a description applies to you, then accept it.

This expression is often used when something derogatory is said about a person who then complains to a third party. The third party, if they agree with the original negative comment, might suggest "If the shoe fits, then wear it". An example of that might be:

Jack: Just because I've missed two or three sessions, my fitness trainer says I lack motivation.
Jill: Well, if the shoe fits, wear it.

Origin

'If the shoe fits, wear it' is often shortened to 'If the shoe fits...', leaving the listener to fill in the blank. The expression is the American version of the earlier British phrase 'If the cap fits, wear it', which is also still in general use. Daniel Defoe used the earlier phrase in the satirical poem The Dyet of Poland. Defoe had the work printed in London in 1705 but, as it was a rather vehement critique of the English parliament, Defoe used the flimsy pretence that it had been printed in Dantzig and was the work of 'Angliopoloski of Lithuania'. Defoe's point in the poem was that readers are responsible for their own opinions; he (or rather Angliopoloski) may have written the poem but that any conclusions drawn from it were owned by the reader, not him:

Gentlemen, and if the Cap fits any Body let 'em wear it.

'If the cap fits' is itself a version of a yet earlier phrase 'if the cloak sitteth fit', that is, 'if the cloak fits well'. This expression dates from the 16th century and was used in print by Richard Hooker in Of the Lawes of Ecclesiasticall Politie, 1593:

Which cloake sitteth no lesse fit on the backe of their cause, then of the Anabaptists.

The 'cloak' version of the phrase does suggest that the later 'cap' was a variant of 'cape'.

As to 'if the shoe fits', that began being used in the late 18th century. The earliest example that I have found in print is from the US newspaper the New York Gazette & Weekly Mercury, May 1773:

Why should Mr. Vanderbeck apply a general comparison to himself? Let those whom the shoe fits wear it.

The change from cap to shoe may well have been influenced by the Cinderella story, which has a snug-fitting slipper as the primary plot device. Versions of the tale that include the 'lost slipper' scenario were well known in the USA and Europe by 1773. In 1634, Giambattista Basile, published Il Pentamerone, a popular collection of Italian folk tales. One of the stories, Cenerentola, is the basis of the Cinderella story as we now know it, complete with wicked stepmother, ugly sisters and a missing slipper.

If the shoe fitsMany expressions, for example, 'toe the line', 'get off your high horse' etc., were first used literally and their metaphorical meaning came later. 'If the shoe fits' is a rarity in that it has gone the other way - having been used for centuries in a figurative sense, its most common usage now is in shoe shop advertising slogans.

Since writing the above piece I've had many reminders from US readers about the shaggy dog story concerning the mythical Foo bird, the droppings of which were supposed to be lucky and shouldn't be washed off. There are as many variants of this old joke as there are tellers of it; the only common element being the punch line "If the Foo shits, wear it".

If the shoe fits...

That's a huge, ugly shoe, and I'm just talking about the prose style. What "tyrant" in CT is going to read through all of that?

Heh.
You know, of course, I was referring to the length of the piece which, the longer it goes on the less the probability of the recipient to read it.

I actually got all the way through it, this time. Good points made poorly are, well, useless.

I am four squarely on his side.
I just hate to see the effort wasted.

Walking through a midwestern grocery last week, I went by the in-store butcher who was stocking the display cooler with meat. He was in the middle of a conversation with a customer, and was openly saying(for anyone to hear) that there will be an armed revolution and civil war in the near years to come.

I thought it telling that the topic is now being spoken without a whisper and without surprised response by those who hear it.

One wonders… how many of their own neighbors, fellow citizens and even family members the “progressive” tyrants are willing to KILL and/or IMPRISON (presumably using guns to enforce), to disarm otherwise law abiding folks... all to protect us and “the children” from the “terrible scourge of gun violence”?

SH was a FEMA drill. It included crisis actors. Plenty of bottled water available, porta-potties, and name tags galore. Adam Lanza essentially a ghost prior to shooting. Even his own relatives couldn't remember him.

No actual proof he shot his mother. If he did drive to SHE he didn't use his mother's BMW. Car belonged to Christopher Rodia, felon. No surveillance video of driving up to school; getting out of car; arming himself; shooting out the glass near the front door. No crime scene photos of either children or adult teacher's bodies. No crime scene photo of dead Adam Lanza. Confusion over whether police shot him or he killed himself. No attempt to interview police officers who either took him down or discovered his body. No autopsy photos of Adam Lanza even though morgue photos of older Boston Bomber where released to media.

911 calls sound amateurish and scripted. Several staged photos later released to media obviously taken prior to December 14 at a rehearsal event. No tears from any parents. Several family and school web sites asking for funds set up prior to actual incident. Families giving ridiculous interviews to media, some within hours of their children supposedly blown away at point blank range in a manner so gruesome that the parents were not allowed to actually identify the bodies.

The school nurse calmly smiling and telling media how she came face to face with the killer who she instantly recognized as the sone of a kindergarten teacher (kid who worked(s) for Bloomberg); then changes story to just seeing his shoes as she hid beneath her computer desk.

The big hero of the day, Rick Thorne, superman janitor, has seemingly disappeared. After racing through the entire building locking doors and breaking his key, not one media outlet sought him out. No interviews with the guy who saved the day????? Oh right. He was the 'substitute' janitor that day. How unusual!

No death certificates released. No autopsy reports for the children since the absolutely demonic and mentally retarded state medical examiner, Wayne Carver, had the foresight to push through a law forbidding it. Of course we still didn't get any autopsy reports on the adults either.

Then we have the staff member shot four times in the foot and leg but made a dramatic recovery just days later as she was feted at a Boston bruins game as a SH heroine. Apparently the AR-15 (which he didn't actually use according to the police report) just didn't do that much damage after supposedly hitting her four times. Now I'd call that very lucky.

No actual verification, video, or photos of bodies being removed. No contract given to any HAZMAT company for clean up of blood, tissue, vomit, urine and fecal waste from the bodies. SHE crime scene conveniently completely torn down, with contractors signing non-disclosure agreements and vowing to remove nothing from the site. Book depository still standing. Columbine still standing. Oh well.

No EMS teams allowed inside building. Ambulances kept at firehouse and not allowed further. Police declare all victims dead even though they had no power to do so. No attempts made to resuscitate any possible survivors. But thanks to Lanza's incredible accuracy with 9mm and 10mm handguns he dispatched all victims cleanly and efficiently.

Two children supposedly sent to Danbury hospital but have never been identified nor have any such parents ever been named or interviewed. Strange police chases around perimeter of school with actors pretending to be suspects escaping through the woods. All let go after cursory check. Police supposedly clear the entire building and then find nurse hiding in closet after 4 hours. Good work!

I could go on for hours but I'm sure you get the picture by now. What actually happened??? We will never know. But there sure were a lot of very strange things going on that day in Sandy Hook. Very strange indeed.

But CT and NY got some new gun laws out of the whole charade and that's all that was important……………..

Good synopsis.

It was a gun control scam from start to finish.

I support the message in this article. I fear USA is _rapidly_ becoming USSA. This monster in CT and the financial meltdown which is nearing, will bring so many things to a head.

I hadn't thought of that, but this gun registration exercise would have been an excellent opportunity to mess with the system by turning in forms for known gun-haters, or for members of the legislature who voted for the gun ban, or for cops who were known to be anti-gun.

If the opportunity arises again, be sure to take advantage of it. Just don't leave your fingerprints on the form.

These are some seriously evil bastards and need to be approached, accordingly.

FBI Informant Reveals Weather Underground Advocated "Killing 25 Million Americans."

I asked, "well what is going to happen to those people we can't
reeducate, that are diehard capitalists?" and the reply was that
    they'd have to be eliminated.

And when I pursued this further, they estimated they would have to
eliminate 25 million people in these reeducation centers.

And when I say "eliminate," I mean "kill."

    Twenty-five million people.

I want you to imagine sitting in a room with 25 people, most of which
have graduate degrees, from Columbia and other well-known educational
centers, and hear them figuring out the logistics for the elimination
    of 25 million people.

    And they were dead serious.
