Walmart Revolutionizes Its Fleet With This New Design
Live Trucking.com ^ | 2/20/14

Walmart recently unveiled their new concept big rig, called the WAVE.

Short for Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience, it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the road.

Not only does it have a radical new appearance, but many of the internal features are also unprecedented.

The steering wheel is positioned directly in the center of the cab, with a completely digital dashboard displayed on monitors on either side of the wheel.

On the outside, the trailer is made of carbon fiber and sheds 4,000 pounds off the weight of traditional semi trucks, allowing it to haul more goods.

The aerodynamic design and hybrid engine were created for maximum efficiency.

With 7,000 trucks and one of the largest fleets in the country, if these new efficient trucks are a success it can lead to many other businesses picking up similar vehicles.

What do you think of this new truck? Like it? Love it? Hate it?. Let us know.

Either way, it’s going to take some time to get used to.

This is one of Walmart's items, no wonder they attract liberal trolls.

Its very hard to see the back of the trailer in the mirror, when you have to cut the wheel while backing. For this reason, most docks are set up so, if you have to turn while backing, you kick the trailer to your left. This way the driver can look out the window to see the end of the trailer.

I think putting the driver in the middle might screw this up.

But the steering wheel in the center of the cab, especially in a semi doesn’t seem too safe.

I think it was a company called Oshkosh that built the drivers compartment in the center of the truck for a line of their concrete mixers?????

Is that one of your souped-up graphics or is that REALLY what the truck looks like.

If one of your graphics — Great Job!! (as always).

“..why don’t they just go for a truck that drives itself..”
It looks like they are. I’d say this is a design that takes autopilot into account. I’m thinking full load in a wreck and carbon fiber in place of steel. After a few no one will want to drive them but google.

Thanks Impala64ssa. Shedding 4000 pounds will make a big difference, even though it’s a shift from dead weight to payload, because fewer trucks are needed to move the same freight. That saves fuel, and of course labor, or rather, makes labor more productive. Walmart is able to operate on really thin margins, and this move is a small example of, when the other guy is treading water, you put a live hose in his mouth.
