I like you, too! (-:
And IMHO history is the very best drama and soap opera you can entertain yourself with because it all actually happened and it all resonates through the centuries! It’s amazing how you can read about battles of the past and men like Charles Martel without whom the entire world would be a very different and much scarier place.
I also try to look past things like the popular knee-jerk view of Nazi Germany to see that the Nazis were very much a product of their time. In 1930’s Germany there was going to be a dictator of some sort because the republic had utterly failed. In some respects I am grateful that the Nazis were the winners in that time because just imagine what would have happened to Europe had Germany gone communist? In short order probably all of Europe would have gone communist, too. Imagine the epic war that would have eventually taken place between a pan-European communist state and the USA?
I’m not so confident we could have won if in 1941 we were not just facing Japan, but the combined military and naval forces of Britain, France, Russia, Germany, and etc.
“Man, there has to be an interesting story there!”
Indeed. It involves a used Lufthansa uniform, some faked documents, and a pissed off Jewish man with a 3-day tourist visa coming into Galveston via Mexico, walking into an Army Air Corp base with detailed maps of every airbase (including the ones forbidden by treaty — this was pre-war) in Austria and Germany and very good information on the specs of German aircraft, including range and dive speed, and even strategy books used to teach German pilots.
After a few phone calls and meetings, he was a Major in the Army Air Corp of a country he’d been in for a week or so.
Post war, he help beg, borrow, and steal aircraft for a nice little re-born country in a crappy neighborhood. ;-)
Someone needs to write this man’s story.
Funny
I drink Martel Cognac as a tribute to Charlie’s War.
If we were facing the combined forces?
I’m thinking you mean a conquered people, conscripting them and co-opting their military apparatus?
Not sure I’d agree but, see where your point could take the discussion
We probably would have still won...eventually.
We would still have an indefatiguable supply of steel, Oil and Gas, gunpowder(Dupont would crazy richer) and a bunch of other stuff like rubber, sugar and cigarettes.
Moreover, we would look at motivations
They would fight with a guns and bayonnets to their back against an enemy who has what tbey want fir themselves and their families, which we would die for to secure for ourselves and loved ones:
In no particular order:
Liberty and freedom, as we think of those terms, particularly when joined as synergistic ideas.
Our Flag
Our Declaration of Independence and the ideals we are inspired with.
We would fight for every man next to us
And Our God.
Game over
There is a pretty good short biography of him in Hebrew, in a collection of about 20 or so other people instrumental in the early days of the IDF. I have several copies, but not here.
I always thought it would make a good movie.
In the 1930’s the communists (just like the fascists) came very close to winning control of several countries via the ballot box. Had Germany gone communist then the momentum would have been on the side of the commies in France and Britain...not to mention the USA where the communists were also very active during the 1930’s.
You never said the gentlemen’s name.
Well, because I don’t want it that easy to figure out my name.
That makes sense.
