I can't possibly be the only one who thought this about the U.S. Olympic teams uniform...

I like the coats plainer, nice, but too many stars on sweaters and not enough stripes.

thx, i learn something new everyday... but to me, it still looks like it was designed by a committee of faggots

it's just WAY too busy, and putting the logo on it, well, it makes it look utterly classless

but that's just me

The design of these sweaters may be tacky but the whole idea of the Olympics is nationalism, my country’s better ‘n your country, etc. It’s to show they can compete vs each other in various sports, despite any political issues that exist between their countries. The uniforms of course are going emphasize each country’s symbols and icons.

IMHO the sweaters were a miss. I liked the pants and the pea coat look very much.

OK, here's my take on the jackets.

Looked at INDIVIDUALLY on a model (such as on the top of this thread) or UP-CLOSE via TV cameras, I agree the apparel is ill-designed, busy, fussy, and so helter-skelter that the garments looked like they were designed by Phyllis Diller on speed.

However, when those hundreds of American athletes marched into the arena EN MASSE, the EMPHATIC effect produced was almost breath-taking. The total image of random splashes of vibrant red, white and blue hues was quite a sight! It was striking, almost stunning.

Some erudite designers will design for effect with just such scenarios in mind....particularly when a venue is extrememly large, or, in this case, Olympic-sized.

I'll bet that if one was in the audience watching at quite a distance, this moving sea of patriotic Americana made one catch one's breath.

If you get a chance to view the Grand Entrance march again, you'll see what I mean. I almost gasped when I saw the effect produced when our guys and gals marched onto the oval in formation....and I felt proud and pumped just looking at it.

Your impression may be the effect that the designer wanted to achieve, but more likely it is a slap at ‘patriotism’ - as in too many Americans wave too many flags, and that disturbs the elites, who want to belong to the larger world not just identify with America.

It seemed that the nordic countries all came in variations of white ski suits - they will not feel targeted if they leave the steel ring of security.

No American competitor can wear one of those sweaters anywhere but their bedroom or the medal podium.

I think the design is an insult to our Flag.

I disagree. I like their uniforms for a change. More ordinary American then metropolitan elitist. Now Germany’s uniforms, yuck! What was up with those?

Totally ridiculous looking and I thought that before I heard there was a “rainbow controversy” in regards to their uniforms.

Yes, the USA uniforms contain symbols and colors that represent the USA and that they are the Olympic team. The German chose a uniform that is suspected to represent something other then Germany or the Olympics. Plus it’s ugly.

Hope it’s true that a lady in the USA knitted the team uniforms. Nothing wrong with the traditional American crazy quilt like design, very down home USA looking.

Really?

I appreciate your opinion, but it’s not 1954. They are not military parades. They are kids. Why can’t we let them be kids? The world needs a lot less military, and a lot more skiing.

I knew a very successful designer from our time in high school. You would have thought he was as queer as a three dollar bill. But he was straight, got more girls than any of us on the football team, and he was the best natural artist I ever knew.

I know isn't that funny! Many years ago I was married to a policeman who had a partner who was tall, slim, with blond hair, limp wrist-ed and minced a bit when he walked. He also had that wicked, sarcastic sense of humor that many seem to equate with gays. Turns out he was straight as an arrow, happily married and had 5 children. We used to die laughing at how people reacted to him. Definitely can't tell a book by it's cover.

He warned the US team not to wear the “flashy” US uniform outside the village.

Your guess is as good as mine.
