Failing Education: The True Cause Of Income Inequality

This year -- an election year -- Obama and the Democrats think they have a winning issue in proposing spending measures and legislation that would fight income inequality. For any Democrat, the rallying cry to getting those measures passed and, subsequently, getting themselves elected (or reelected), will be that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer; and, that they are the ones watching out for the poor while the Republicans only want to protect the rich. Thus, we will be going back to the 2008 campaign when Obama told "Joe the Plumber" that we need to "spread the wealth around."

However, the real reason that we have income inequality in this country has to do with something that the Democrats are completely complicit in: Sustaining a failing and highly unionized educational system for the sole purpose of garnering union votes. It is actually the level of someone's education that determines whether or not a person will be able to share in the wealth of this country and not a bunch of Democrat-sponsored "band aids" such as raising the minimum wage, or extending unemployment benefits, or whatever. There is no better proof of that than this chart:

Sorry, but that’s not the reason... the fact is that some people are just smarter than others.

Here’s one view of mine:

Some kids just don’t take initiative. The school is supposed to teach, but at some point the student has to start working towards their own future. They should be going to the library more often, using the books and resources there, or going to various other libraries and doing research. You can’t just sit around and let the teachers decide what information you’re going to be getting out of life.

Some students do well in high school, but fail later because out of all they learned from the teachers, they failed to learn initiative and failed to expand their horizons intellectually in regards to teaching themselves. Taking initiative is what will determine success in any way that anyone can define it. Students who were stars in school mess up in real life because real life isn’t about sitting back and having people give the information to you.

Resourcefulness is another issue; if you don’t learn to make do and use what you have, you’ll never go anywhere. A lot of people oddly think that you shouldn’t try to run a business or do something practical if you don’t’ ave a degree.

As long as there is ambition inequality, there will be income inequality.

I don’t think I know anyone who thinks that....

How can anyone be “drummed down” in this day and age. You can find out more than you want, from botany to quantum physics with a few mouse clicks...

In the late 1980s, I had a neighbor who taught high school science classes. One year she showed me textbooks, which were glorious, full color productions, nothing like the stodgy texts of my youth. (We were still using Latin textbooks from the 1930, which had been through multiple re-bindings over the last 3 decades.)

She was teaching what purported to be college prep level classes. Before a test, she would go over the material that was supposed to be fair game for testing; she said the outcome was predictable: there would be on B in the class, a handful of Cs, and the rest would get Ds and Fs. She practically handed out the answers, but unmotivated people are not going to deliver, no matter how slick the books and how the teacher spoon feeds the material.

Facilities do not make the student. My schools were all basic buildings with nothing particularly glitzy, nothing like the palaces I saw when I took short night courses in other locations.

If the student is unmotivated and the parents do not push, no one should be shocked at bare literacy at "graduation." At some point, well before junior high, one should understand that one is responsible for personal academic outcomes...

The problem in schools starts in kindergarten. They cripple the children with whole word reading instruction, making functional illiterates out of most of the average IQ kids and all of the below average ones.

You can’t read to learn if you haven’t learned to read.

well that depends. you can find “facts” everywhere now. not to digress, but when I grew up in the 70’s if you were hanging on the street corner and someone asked you a question, there was no cell phone to call anyone, no cable news to go home to, no computer and internet to look it up when you got home. the only place to find anything out was a book or reason it out for yourself.
now, its at their finger tips. however, you can’t “look up”, ambition, integrity, and the ability to realize the public schools are brainwashing you.
my 19 year old niece goes to umass Amherst and she lectured her 85 year old grandpa on the joys of homosexuality. I said, dad, too bad ted kennedys dead or else you could keep voting for him. happy now?

Reminds me of a Lombardi story. One of his players, a lineman I think, got named All Pro, much to his own surprise. In his own words, "I thought I stank."

Yeah, but you’ve got to take the initiative to make those clicks yourself. Your mouse won’t click to access all of that information on its own.

Exactly; for some reason ambition, professional ambition has become something to be ashamed of and that people should just stay in their places.

How much do you have to pay an adult to tell a six year old how to add 2+2? They don’t need a college degree. The teacher, that is, oh exxcuuusee me. THE EDUCATOR!! Or equator or equilateral pointy thing.

And how often do you hear that the kids don’t come prepared for school?

If they already KNOW how to add, what exactly are you needed for? Referee?

You need a Masters Degree and six years of college to teach a child the difference between red and blue? Assuming they may not be color blind. In which case you get bonus points for doing what you should do anyway.

Why?

Because you had years as an adult to plumb the mystical depths of coloring books that the YUNUNS DINT HAAV?

Critical thinking. BaaD. Time out for you. After you see the nurse along with the other unprepared malcontents.

Now you are betterrrr. Butterfly sticker for you to take home.

All of a sudden Obama is touting equality of opportunity after abandoning the concept in favor of outcome based education in 2008.

How can he he do an about face and expect people not to notice?

Education is the great equalizer, but the student must be motivated to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented. That is the reason that the progressives switched to outcome based education, they felt that white children had an unfair advantage in motivation that was rooted in historic White privilege.

The fact is that the Progressives destroyed the motivation of students in the poor urban communities when they destroyed their self respect.

Just as we have an IQ gap, we have an income gap. It’s that simple.
