LONDON (AP) Documents leaked by former NSA contactor Edward Snowden suggest that spy agencies have a powerful ally in Angry Birds and a host of other apps installed on smartphones across the globe.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Most modern cell phones call already be tracked, IIRC, so a software app that makes it even easier seems quite possible.
I doubt I have that problem, though. My cell phone’s so old, it’s a rotary.
Not very smart, Smart Phones.
It sounds like Android is an NSA dream in terms of accessibility.
When you install programs (er, apps) on Android’s latest version 4.4, they tell you what sorts of security access they have, but you can’t do anything about it except not install. It’s common for the apps to have access to memory, the camera, the mike, the wireless connection. So, if the NSA (or anyone else) has a way into the app....
I only use my little Android tablet when I’m out of the country and can’t carry a real laptop.
I am old enough I can actually do without a phone, cell or otherwise.
I do have a $10 a month pay as you go phone with absolutely no features. I carry it in case of emergency, normally it is off and only my wife has the number. I think I will keep it.
There is a reason for those free apps.

A true “smart phone” (i.e., no phone).
We have a home phone which I never fought but I held out against having a cell phone until the wifie started raising too much Cain about not being able to reach me.
My nav app’s web site can show me where I drove overlayed on a map, when I logon to it.
You know what is needed for this?
A phone case that blocks the radio signals.

Phone reception drops when you place them in an anti-static bag.
A cheap cell phone is a compromise. We plan on turning in our land line when the wife retires. Any one that wants to reach us can email.
Almost all the calls I get are someone trying to sell me something, why pay for the privilege of having to say no.
