He betrayed his oath as an officer to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. If he had stayed faithful to his oath, the casualties to all families - northern and southern - would have been far fewer.
I do not admire the man.

He betrayed his oath as an officer to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. He did swear such an oath. And he adhered to it. Defense of the Constitution was the basis for his actions.
There are many who now seem to accept the notion that defense of a current Government is the same as defense of the Constitution. I disagree with them.
