But , the facts were a record producer who met and turned down Manson at that home owned the place and moved out and rented it out just before the murder.
The producer was Doris Day’s son and his live in girlfriend was Candace Bergen .
Reportedly ,Manson thought the couple still lived there !
You’re right re: the author being wrong about Manson knowing who was in the house. It was a rental property, and did not belong to Polanski or Tate. Manson knew about the house because Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson had once rented it, and allowed Manson & his Family to stay there for a while. They ended up taking it over, and Wilson moved out of his own place just to get away from them.
Manson later moved to the ‘ranch’ in the desert. He returned to Wilson’s former rental to commit murder [rather, to have his Family do it for him] not because he knew the identity of the current renters but because the place was a familiar one.
