Why in the world would GM announce a dividend (subsequently hurting investors who buy on the news) hours before giving negative guidance?

It maybe simpler than this... The North America International Auto Show is on in Detroit, Biden is their and they have to make big news. IMHO they also suffer from a bit of "Ford Envy" at the moment and have to do a "me too" just like Ford brought the divi back.

We in realville know about the VEBA and what a land mine it is for GM along with their unsold properties worth something like 2 billion if they could get it for the land...

You make a good point inre to the “Ford envy” thing. I’d also like to be a fly on the wall on what the big shots at GM have to say about the aluminum Ford pickups coming out (next year?), Ford trucks are already outselling Chevy and GMC pretty handily.
