Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has won the 2013 Heisman Trophy.

Winston is only the second redshirt freshman to win the award after Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel was handed the trophy as a redshirt freshman last year. Winston is the third player in school history to earn the distinction, following former Seminole QBs Charlie Ward ('93) and Chris Weinke ('€™00).

I liked Fulmer, but I think enough fans felt like he had lost the fire and it went downhill - especially with the Clawfense.

Hindsight being 20/20, I wish he had stayed, but that is the nature of the beast in college football. Look at what is happening in Texas. Almost a mirror image with Mack Brown.

It’s hard to stay on top in college football. I liked Fulmer so don’t take it that I didn’t. I think fans have unrealistic expectations. Zook took UF to bowl games and they canned him. Too much money and too much passion involved and the higher you set the bar the harder it is to maintain.

Few fans agree on what happened and in hindsight we would have been better off keeping him. We were a few plays away from another shot at a NC in 2001 and it seemed to go downhill after that. Hopefully we got it right now, but it remains to be seen. Go Vols!

Given the power and influence of FSU, is there not also at least a slim chance the Winston DA may have done the same thing as the Simpson jury?

In the case of Willie Meggs, the answer is clearly No. Meggs rose to police sergeant before going to law school, and has been the State Attorney (Florida-speak for DA) since 1985. Meggs takes a very hard line with FSU athletes who transgress the law. Among the high-profile Seminole football players he has prosecuted are Greg Dent, Darnell Dockett, Travis Johnson, Laverneous Coles and Peter Warrick. Notably, Meggs' handling of this case has the full confidence of the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence. Sometimes, there's just no "there" there.

I don’t blame the fans for anything.

Fulmer was fired from the top.

The regents sent the program into a kamikaze mission.

I actually miss Fulmer, I miss Tennessee-Florida being a meaningful game.

Guess we’re both in the gutter now.

You have a better chance of pulling out than we do.

Tennessee has a major top-hat problem that has been around for 40 years.

You must not have listened to sportstalk much in Knoxville. It got pretty brutal the last few seasons and the News-Sentinel did not help much either.

I think the boosters carried much more weight than the board did and Hammy was in over his head. To each their own and we can see if the same thing happens to Texas.

Given that my area is outside of the WNOX broadcast, it would help to summarize.

Ask yourself why Dickey ran from Tenn to Fla?

Our fans sounded just like the fans in Austin or the fans in Gainesville. The most vocal wanted Fulmer run out on a rail.

Like many things, the truth was probably somewhere in the middle. College football coaches make really big money and subsequently fans (and boosters) expect big results. The days of loyalty and alma mater are outweighed by the amount of money that rides on a program. I think the boosters screamed for a new offense and we got Dave Clawson and the disastrous year (08?) of the Clawfense. Ironically, Clawson has shown himself to be a great coach with a great offense so I can’t figure out what happened either.

They were close this year. Georgia was a killer as that game was in hand. We did get the Gamecocks and that was sweet.

What we don’t have is coordination. Coach Jones wanted a bowl, big-time. He did not get it.

This team requires coordination and strength. The schedule was brutal.

My take.

Fat Cats,

GET OFF MY FIELD. I SHALL BRING FOOTBALL BACK TO NEYLAND STADIUM!

I think Butch is on the right path. This recruiting class is awesome if we can hold onto it and the 2015 class is off to a great start. Recruiting is most important because we don’t have the speed to compete right now.

I think we have some good years ahead in a tough conference.

We played 7 top 25 teams. That is one hell of a curve.

Yeah - I am still trying to figure out what idiot said the schedule for Purdue (I think I read that) was harder than ours this season. That was hardest schedule I have ever seen - especially considering the rankings of teams we played early in the season that were really hurt by injuries to end the season.

I give Butch a pass this season and next - after that we will know what we got.

I can’t necessarily talk about my involvement with college football anymore, I can guarantee Tennessee had a wicked schedule.

If Purdue alums wish to align it to Tennessee, have at it.

Thanks for the summary. Something was never right with this case

I wonder why the media is so quick to convict Winston....when the same media a few yrs ago did everything to cover up Kobe Bryant’s rape of a hotel worker...yes Bryant raped her...his out of court settlement would confirm that

That news conference by Patricia Carroll was kinda bizarre. Wonder what political connections Carroll has to get her white client to get the media to believe a black Heisman Trophy frontrunner and winner raped her?

Difference between Kobe and Winston is that Kobe actually raped a woman. Kobe settled out of court with his victim...after his lawyers and the media lied and slimed everything about her.

Winston was never given the benefit of doubt like Kobe was

You can’t even follow your own logic……because you can’t have the one without the other…..and yet….you don’t see that.

You are simultaneously elevating the Heisman over what it really is - and denigrating Winston on hearsay evidence - all so you can make the case that he does not rise to the appropriate level for that award.

This is not a community service award. There are other awards more targeted at that kind of quality, and he did not win those awards.

BUT - What if there is absolutely no truth to the accusations? Ruh Roh, you hadn’t even let that thought cross your mind, had you.

Meanwhile, if in a civil suit or whatever more evidence comes to light, which might happen by the way, then the award will be taken from him post facto. Thus him getting the award now is the appropriate result, based on what is known.

What is bothersome is how so many Freepers have been so quick to convict Winston. As for the media, the media sided with the accuser because she was the girl….I saw some of these press conferences, and the female members of the media were all emotional and angry. As for the media surrounding Kobe, I don't remember too many details of that affair….except that Kobe is kind of part Italian part black and exotic in an Obama type way (in the medias eyes) - so maybe thats it.

BTW, off topic, profs to Kobe for how he reacted to Jim Brown's racist comments.
