Try Mepis Linux; it's the one I rely upon for most things. It is based upon Debian Stable and I have found it boots reliably on quite a few different machines including laptops. Mepis 8.0 is based upon the last Debian Stable; "Lenny" and is quite easy on resources on a modern machine. Mepis 11 is the most recent (they expect to release v12 very soon) but requires more resources and drive space. However you do get updated drivers and codecs with it.

All are live-disc versions, 8.0 fits on a CD and v11 on a DVD. Free to download and play with to see if you like it, and install later if you wish -even allows dual-booting, for more speed.

For most server machines, I use Fedora. For this desktop/laptop, I use SUSE.

I'm playing with the Live DVD on another desktop now. I'm favorably impressed with what I've seen of this MINT release. It doesn't have some libraries that I need on the live DVD, but a full install may fix that.

I'm not a big fan of KDE, and I'm used to having multiple desktops, but I'm happy with the stock drivers, except for touch-screen support.

I wonder if there is a Linux variant (I use Ubuntu) that would fit on a 1gb usb? Most small ones need at least 2 I think. They need twice as much room as they take up I think.
