I think with very few exceptions most distros these days are live-disc versions, with generally the specialist distros (security, firewall, kiosk) only mandating an install.

I don't do a lot of bleeding edge stuff these days. I have so much specialty software that has to be re-compiled to work on new releases that when I've got a solid distro, I stay with it for a couple of years.
