You are already over my head... every time I want to purge crap that is outdated or no longer works, I have to go research on ‘ixquick’..
Like I said before, I am no pro on Linux... but it is growing on me more very day..
IO think 1 of the biggest problems (minus the easy access app windows), is the fact you have to input the password for anything that may or will affect the system.
I outgrew that prob... we just need to get the rest of the entitlement generation to accept an understand .... (so many curse words left out :p)
ouch... not to or from you.... just the ‘ports’... within the last decade, I have seen PC gaming companies go from extreme graphics/performance on PCs to producing for the plat-formers... and then PORTING to the PC... terrible crap coming out now-a-days... Heck, Games for PCs back 15 years ago are better than the ported crap they come out with now... :/
Even funnier, the ported crap, sometimes runs better on Linux than on Mac or Win platforms :p .... weird tech world we are living in now... and like I mentioned before (can’t remember if it was ion this thread, or not), sometimes, I wish I was back in DOS world.... (maybe before that, even)..
BTW.. there is so much difference in respond time here, compared to ANY LINUX forums...

There are notable exceptions to the porting rules though. The entire Battlefield series from EA was developed on PC and ported to consoles. All of the Grand Theft Auto series is developed on PC. Most MMOs are developed on PC (i.e. WoW, EVE, WoT). The biggest console-developed titles are FPS titles like CoD, but I think Microsoft even programmed that on PC. Games like Halo, however, are console-only.
The problem with console gaming is that your platform never changes with the times, so you have to “upgrade” in 4-6 years at $400 a pop while I can upgrade my components over time or even overclock them to meet new demands.
All are live-disc versions, 8.0 fits on a CD and v11 on a DVD. Free to download and play with to see if you like it, and install later if you wish -even allows dual-booting, for more speed.

I'm playing with the Live DVD on another desktop now. I'm favorably impressed with what I've seen of this MINT release. It doesn't have some libraries that I need on the live DVD, but a full install may fix that.
I'm not a big fan of KDE, and I'm used to having multiple desktops, but I'm happy with the stock drivers, except for touch-screen support.

I hear you, mate. I am forced to use 'doze for certain specific high-end programs that allow that as an option. CAD/CAM, SPICE, and Engineering proggies that now have 'doze versions available, but not Linux.
For everything else, I rely upon Linux exclusively. Nice not staring at a BSOD over and over again, lol!
Is it a stable release? Long term support?

The fan wouldn’t work on mine and I downloaded something to make the fan work, I don’t remember what but I could try to find out.
My ONLY complaint with Ubuntu is that they’re going the same route as Microsoft with regards to compatibility, thus increasing the footprint of their repositories. They’re exceptionally good at keeping order to their apt repos, but at some point, that monster’s going to grow out of control.
I wonder if there is a Linux variant (I use Ubuntu) that would fit on a 1gb usb? Most small ones need at least 2 I think. They need twice as much room as they take up I think.
Until then I will enjoy the stability
I run SuSE on the desktop and laptop exclusively (my whole home runs it). I am a little disappointed with 13.1 and the missing nVidia repo. That was supposed to be resolved last week and still nothing from nvidia so I am stuck with nouveau for the time being.
I may move over to Mint on the other desktop box, but I'll have to copy a whole lot of data to an external disk.

Yes, there are. The trick is to run them as their disc-image on the flash drive so it does not attempt to continually write to it.
