If a cop has taken care to aim at shooting out tires, the resulting headline is a misrepresentation to say, "open fire", which not precisely, but nonetheless, conveys "fire-at-will" engagement.

Or more likely the bullet could miss the van entirely and kill someone beyond the van.

It would be next to impossible to shoot out the tires in this circumstance.

I agree, but it’s hard to tell what he did. “Open fire” will get more clicks than “Shoots at tires”.

"After being issued the citation, the officer wrote that Ferrell proceeded to drive north in her Kia Sedona minivan after declining to pay the fine or return to Taos to contest it before a judge."

He had already issued the ticket. Why did he continue to follow her? She has every right to completely ignore the ticket and let it turn into a bench warrant.

I fault the officer by not shooting the woman in the head, then killing all the children to make sure they don’t infect the gene pool any further.

“Apparently she had to either pay the fine on the spot or go see a judge immediately to contest it.”

The ticket was $126. She has the mañana mentality and refused to deal with it that very day. This is small town New Mexico and they want the $126 fine money. So you don’t get to “mail it in” later. You pay now or see the local yokel judge and maybe get lucky with him.

She made up her own third option which was to do neither and drive away.

The cops were clearly out of control and their response was totally inappropriate.

First, demanding that the driver pay the ticket on the spot. Clearly a shakedown by a small town trying to get money from tourists.

Then bashing in the window of the car with a bunch of kids in it.

And then finally firing THREE shots at the car.

All I can say is stay out of New Mexico. First the torture by rectal scanning of the poor guy in Deming and now this.

I hope the towns get financially wiped out by the lawsuits.

And too many black people are incapable of realizing that they will be collecting ‘precious metals’ sooner rather than later if their little demigod barry is not removed from power along with his entire regime of racists, anti-American thugs.

Did he shoot the kids?

Looked like he was going for the tires.

High speed chases usually end in fiery crashes. Lot more risk of death in that. They were trying to prevent it.

She’s entirely responsible. An ordinary criminal, running from the law because she knew that with drug paraphernalia inside, she was going to have the kids taken from her.

In her case, that’s the meal ticket going away most likely.

Apparently he missed everything he was shooting at. Bullets keep going and people miss what they are aiming at.

High speed chases do not “usually” end up in fiery crashes. especially ones with overladen minivans.

Of course she’s a bonehead and responsible for her behavior. Doesn’t mean the cops need to start shooting. That drug paraphernalia is hardly cause to put a bullet in a kid.

Do you really think that firing 3 or 4 shots at the van as it was driving away with a car full of innocent kids was appropriate???

Sorry, I give the cops the benefit of the doubt almost always but this was over the line.

The cops overreacted by firing on the vehicle. That should not have happened.

In addition the police were probably unaware that black people have been issued blanket immunity and no longer have to stop when instructed by police. Moreover, they are not subject to speed limits or other traffic laws.

In the opinion of the cops can do no wrong crowd [and there are legion] on Free Republic, anything is cause for the police to put a bullet in the head of a kid, or two Mexican ladies delivering newspapers, or an old man in Texas on his porch, or a child carrying a pellet gun in California, or a former Marine in Arizona.

Shooting at a car for fleeing a minor traffic infraction is insane. Our whole system of justice is founded on the principle that it is better to let a criminal go free than to punish an innocent one. America is not a war zone. There are way too many Rambo wanna be’s out there masquerading as cops.
