Well, I can not imagine living in a desert. I have seen many movies and TV shows that had some poor guy in the desert with his car broken down. Yes, if you are an indian, having grown up in a desert culture, you would know how to survive most any situation. If you are a gringo in such situations, you are dead.
As for the typhoon, it was no problem for us. The reason it was such a disaster is that it hit a low area with very high population density, and very poor construction. Remember, it is considered the worst typhoon in recorded history.
As a precaution, we spent two nights in a very substantial small hotel, over on the main highway. We could walk to it.
No living situation provides a guarantee of safety or comfort, but location is the most important. If I were back in the USSA, I would choose my home area of middle to east Tennessee.

Been a very busy week wrapping up projects. Had the contractor finish the new fencing around the rear garden. I added four more raised beds this year. We have run out of weather until spring to electrify the exterior of the fence with our solar unit.
Had a near miss with a tree. We re-sided the house and barn with fiber cement and new roofs with class A shingles. I had to take a deep breath and count my blessings afterwards.
It was Hickory. Cleaned up and stacked. The new fence is in the background.
This is an older picture of the garden:
I am tired of feeding the critters. Lesson learned in gardening.
This week I also purchased the G-3300 Envirofit Rocket Stove and a Saratoga Jacks insulated slow cooker. I will report how they work later.
Finally, will be wrapping up the wireless security system and remote spots tomorrow. I will also report on those later.

Thanks, Kart. Will be on the lookout for the Keystone Meats canned beef at my local WallyWorld.
Thanks, GeronL, for the can opening *trick*. Priceless!

“...iodine deficiency in Americans today”
I’m going to guess from that, that all the salt that is pumped into processed food is of the non-iodine type.

You’re right every location has its risks and pluses. We’ve got a long term drought going here in New Mexico that needs a lot of rain and snow to replenish the water supply. That’s good news you and your family did okay. Be safe.

In the interests of full disclosure, I never served. I did grow up an Army brat, so my Dad served, and I went to a *lot* of schools, living on and around various Army forts. Hence my familiarity with this wonderful artifact.

I know this is a simple thing but a fundemental tool for light or fire that is easy to carry in a pocket or bag, car, toolbox, is the mini Bic lighter.......once I was in an office building when the power went off...Dont think anyone noticed there were no windows but when the lights were off they did, being able to pull out a lighter was like showing fire to cavemen,,,hahaha

Yep, as well as much of the food served in restaurants - according to what I’ve been able to discover anyway.

I don’t know how to break this to you. But the desert southwest was actually populated for centuries before Sam Walton said, “Hey, I should open a business. A little store,,, yeah”
There are many areas where you can live, have water, grow food, hunt, and even enjoy life. And for some reason, 270 ammo seems to be found in abundance.

I’m going to try it tomorrow. We’re coddling and caring for our 18 year old cat...feeding her canned tuna and salmon...so I’ll try it with a can of tuna.

Thanks Onyx.
I got it cleaned up:
I rebuilt the steps this year and added 12V LED lighting. Just have to add the star to the upper barn door now.
