The most influential opinion-formers have found a scapegoat: Marx blamed the capitalist system, Freud blamed sex, Dawkins blamed religion, Larkin blamed his parents and Dr Atkins blamed the potato. Footballers blame the goalkeeper.

This is why liberals think that Marxism will eventually work. That’s why they keep doing the same thing that hasn’t ever worked in the past. In one of their multiverses, it will eventually work.

This is sort of like me believing that in one of my possible multiverses, I will be able to afford front-row seats to LA Kings games and will be invited to party at Max Americana’s lavish Hollywood mansion.

Well, if you come of age in 1970 in one of those multiverse universes, the Kings' tickets shouldn't be an issue.

13 year old hockey players also blame the goalie. I have to constantly remind them that the other team skated through 5 players before they got to the goalie. It usually shuts them up.

Think I am doing ok though. Haven’t seen the goalies head show up on my porch....yet.

If you are a Kings fan, you might remember when poor Rogie Vachon would get 40 shots on goal game after game during the Triple Crown (Dionne, Simmer, Taylor) years. The best four men on the ice for the same team at a time. Absolutely no defense.

I agree. If your defensive players can’t stop a hot-playing striker, blaming the goalkeeper should be the last thing on their minds.

A goalkeeper can use his hands, has protected status in the eyes of the refs, isn’t running up and down the field all game and is the last man. In his expanded role in using more of himself to keep a ball out of the net, one of the most important parts is his brain. He must have good judgment simply because there is no one else behind him to fix his mistake. The other advantages give his mistakes a higher profile.

Joe Hart’s mistake in the Chelsea game last week was rushing out past the 18 while his defender was trying to deal with Torres. In that case it would have been more prudent to stay put. That’s also not the first and only costly blunder he’s made recently.

In this discussion about the culpability of players, it is still possible for the last man to be at fault even if the ball got past the others. They perform or they get replaced. It’s consistent with capitalism and the tenet of personal responsibility (no one owes me a living) that used to be in the mainstream in this country. Ask Brad Friedel, one of the three American goalkeepers in the EPL, about his mistake last week.

As a former defender, I see a lot of poor defending even at professional levels.

Let's face it. These professionals are motivated primarily by big paychecks. Sacrificing their bodies for the team is a lower-level priority.
