Don't know what the screech is, but one of the things about installing a starter is that sometimes they have to be "shimmed". That is, the plane of the starter's gear rotations has to be outside the plane of the engine's flywheel rotations.

Starters are only supposed to engage the teeth of the flywheel when starting the engine. If they fail to engage properly, or disengage properly, you can get ... inappropriate ... noises.

By the way, I'm back from the wilds of Pennsylvania. Mr. Penn's woods didn't have enough leaves on them.

Busdaddy listened to it and he thought it might be something to do with the flywheel, as well, but evidently had never heard that sound before, so his response wasn’t nearly as knowledgeable as yours.

So. At this point, do I take it back where I got it and have them install a new one while I wait? I can’t see me paying my mechanic twice for the same job. He’s too much of a keeper to cause any dissention!
