I'm guessing a lot of "the law", portrayed as a foreign language (Latin) that only lawyers speak, can be approached and dealt with using English ... which is what Latin translates into.

I mean ... if nolo contendre means 'I do not wish to contend' ... why not just say, "I do not wish to contend" ?

You are so right, it just makes it more difficult for the lay man it makes no sense, maybe it’s to keep the rest of us from representing ourselves? It sums up to say what you mean, mean what you say.
