Nah, this kind of expulsion was entirely predictable. All you have to do is look at the trends going back 20-30 years, and you will see a clear progression leading up to this.
There’s no progression towards people not consuming “violent” entertainment or video games. It’s what consumers demand, by a pretty wide margin. They can pass a law trying to wish it away, but their law can’t magically generate demand for some other form of entertainment that isn’t there.
If they passed such a law, most titles would just bomb. There would be a few exceptions of non-violent games that would still be good enough to achieve popularity, like Tetris, or the Sims, but those would be too rare to support the industry, so it would fail.
For your sake, and my son’s I hope you are correct. But I suspect there will be a movement by libs, feminists, marxists, socialists and communists to mould opinions and turn guns into the pariahs they all imagine them to be. You will have to turn in your friends with gun play video games. Parents who allow their children to use video games with gun play will be considered bad parents, child abusers who must be turned in to govt. officials.
People who believe that will never happen because the games are so popular now are young. There was a time in this country when open carry was allowed practically everywhere. I bet they couldn’t imagine a day like today. Just as you can’t imagine what’s coming if you keep believing it will never happen.
