Totalitarian nations, dictatorships, and police states dont happen overnight. They start out as supposedly good ideas with considerable support from the citizenry. In fact, history shows that in the beginning, despots and tyrants are often viewed as heroic protectors, benevolent rulers, welcomed with fanfare and open arms champions of the people. But eventually, average citizens wake up one day amidst chaos and decay, look around, and ask in bewilderment, Wha hoppin? Of course by that time, its usually too late to do anything about it.
In a similar way, our government has begun to resemble something akin to a foreign occupation. However you choose to describe it, its an alarming departure from what was once a constitutional republic: In President Obamas own words, a fundamental change is taking place. Like many tyrannies of the past, its been a gradual process. And like many tyrannies, much of the population cant see it coming. With the Democrats in charge while the GOP establishment gives their tacit approval, the country at large seems perfectly happy to have the government running everything.
There are a few conservatives that have opposed this contagion of soft tyranny. Make no mistake, the Right has become the enemy: a rabble of extremists that the Left is vigorously silencing through intimidation and propaganda. The liberal establishment has no desire to make peace with their political opponents. They seek only one thing: an end to the conservative movement as a viable political force.
For the purpose of this blog, I wont spend time making a case for my views. You either see it or you dont. Instead, Ill use the occupation historical metaphor to express what I see is happening in this country. So there it is: Astute observer or political crackpot? You decide.
