The original still had the coolest Robot and the coolest Spaceship IMHO.
I loved the scene with all the Doctors at Walter Reed talking about the miracle healing “salve” that Klatu gave them while they were sitting there smoking unfiltered Cigarettes.
The robot in the original Day the Earth Stood Still was the subject of urban legends, claiming that the actor in the suit was various celebrities, ranging from Captain Kangaroo to Ed McMahon. In fact, the actor was a non-actor, a doorman at a Chinese restaurant in New York who was very tall and therefor able to almost fill-out the robot suit. I think even then he had to stand on some kind of extended legs.
Hahah! Yeah, I remember being at my g’parents old farmhouse looking at ads in 1950s magazines where the doctor in a white labcoat, stethoscope and the round forehead reflector would tell me why Chesterfields or some other cigatette was the brand to smoke.
