Liz Cheney has not made a case for her challenge to Mike Enzi in a Wyoming Republican primary next year, former Sen. Olympia Snowe told POLITICO.
The Maine Republican senator said the decision by Cheney to take on the genial third-term senator is unfortunate, given that Enzi travels home often and reflects his constituents conservative beliefs while also working to do the right thing for the right reasons legislatively.
There is no reason to challenge him. What is the basis? That hes not working hard enough? Hes working very hard, Snowe said. That hes not conservative enough? I think its regrettable.
Snowe served with Enzi in the upper chamber for 16 years and since her retirement in January has increasingly sought to defend her colleagues from conservative challengers. She and former moderate Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio) are banding together to protect the partys centrist members.
LaTourette said in an interview Monday that their group will be taking a close look at the Wyoming race. Other Senate GOP candidates he said they are looking to protect are Sen. Susan Collins in Maine and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia.
Cheney has sought to position herself as a fresh-faced alternative to the longtime legislator but initial polls show Enzi with a wide lead. Snowe said Senate Republicans need more people like Enzi focused on problem solving rather than those critical of compromise.
Shes a talented, very capable woman, Snowe said of Cheney. But where the party stands at this point, its important to have Mike Enzi in the process.
Olympia Snowe wouldn't recognize a conservative belief if it walked up and bit her on the arse.
Unless it's an Arkansas thing, where the bulk of people elect Clinton just to get them away from the state.
Olympia Snow is the MOTHER of Obamacare. Her vote brought it out of committee. ‘Nuff said?
But Rand Paul is protecting him too.Because he's trying to run for President from the inside of the beltway.
This is a big reason why it's becoming more difficult for a principled conservative to throw their hat into the Presidential ring. In order to be competitive, you have to sacrifice so many of your principles that, to a lot of people, it's just not worth it.
Actually, limited government is the key to liberty - though “rotation in office” would likely lead to a more limited government than we have now.
I’m not so sure that’s the reasoning.
Enzi as I understand it has the more libertarian, Constitutionalist view that Rand has re: NSA domestic spying.
Liz is full-force pro-domestic spying.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to infer that it was the ONLY reason.
Senator Paul’s antipathy toward the Cheneys is well known...as is his philosophical differences with the former Vice-President.
But his support of Senator McConnell’s upcoming re-election campaign strikes me as more self-serving than philosophical.
JMHO.
Yes,, I agree re: McConnell, though I’m not sure I’m convinced of the new guy’s conservatism in that case either.
Still, Rand ran to endorse McConnell before the field was set.
The last thing we need though, is to make the female voice of the GOP a vocal pro-homosexual agenda pusher to counter the conservative females, I think that this is more of a set up.
LIZ Cheney wanted DADT ended and rejoiced when it was, she was against DOMA, is against a constitutional amendment to save marriage, and supports gay marriage, and supports the State department move to the gay agenda.
Two GOPe candidates ... not a dime”s worth of difference.
Thanks cotton1706.
Talk about an entitlement mentality!
How about, she thinks she can do a better job? That's all the case she needs to make.
