There's some tension regarding the "common use" standard in Heller: by that standard, most AR and AK variants are in common use.

In addition, the 7th Circuit has raised the standard of review for gun control laws: they have to prove not only that they have a rational basis, but also that they have a reasonable probability of reaching the stated goal in the least intrusive way possible. The 7th Circuit is edging closer to a strict scrutiny test, which follows Heller insofar as the 2nd Amend is a "fundamental" right.

Of course, under strict scrutiny, the whole Illinois gun control apparatus (including FOID) goes away: nothing like waiting weeks for a FOID when you need protection immediately.

Perhaps Illinois should just register everyone for a FOID when you obtain or renew a drivers license, just like voting./s

I’d love to see bans on normal capacity magazines and “assault” weapons go away. If Obama manages to appoint another Supreme Court justice or two, though...forget it.
