"Almost all of the dealers who lost out were Republican donors. "

Well, yeah, but almost all car dealers are Republicans...IIRC correctly, this was studied at the time and the report was there were a few Democrat dealers who lost their dealerships, and since there weren't many Democrats with dealerships to begin wit, the ratios were not much different.

It wouldn't surprise me that the majority of automobile dealers were Republicans. They are, after all, busniessmen.

My recollection is that a FReeper undertook to study this issue -- laboriously cross-indexing the listed owners with the published donor lists and reporting daily on FR.

As I recall, before he gave up the task, he had found one in 300 of the terminated dealers to be a Democrat -- a Chrysler dealer in KC, MO.

Further, I recall one of the appointive members of the Car Czar group (Rattner or Bloom, I think) resigned their position several months in...without comment. Subsequently, he revealed in a (rarely cited) interview that "politics had played too large a part in dealership selection".

I'd agree that automobile dealers are disproportionately Republican. But I don't doubt, given this administration's history, that the terminated dealers were even more disproportionately Republican.

As this administration itself has been prone to say: Disparate Impact.
