How would the recipient (Reid in this case) know where the individual donors got their money from (Harvey Whittemore)? How would Harvey benefit from his "generosity" if Harry didn't know where the individual donors got their money from?

Good question.
Harvey was acting like a bundler, perfectly legal. He was ostensibly hitting up his friends for donations.
The illegality was that the $ came from Harvey's own pocket.
