So true. Not just keeping the plants alive until harvest but ESPECIALLY getting the soil ready. In my experience it takes three seasons to get suburban yard soil ready to produce.

I'm opening new ground this year to extend my big garden. It will be several years before it's really productive like the rest of the garden is.

That takes a lot of work, and a lot of knowledge and skills that you don't really learn from a book.
