Why Lindsey Graham's Support for Immigration Reform Isn't Popular in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Avery and Susan Burns don’t like the immigration-reform bill in the U.S. Senate one bit. “People come here illegally, and now we’re giving them the red carpet,” grumbled Avery, a 71-year-old doctor, climbing the steps of the public library on a recent morning.

His disgust is making him reconsider his support for home-state Sen. Lindsey Graham, the only Republican sponsor of the bill who is up for reelection in 2014. Yet Susan said she’d still vote for Graham because he’s a “strong Republican,” recalling his leadership during former President Clinton’s impeachment.

The retired couple’s reaction shows why Graham has reason to be on his toes, but not to panic.

Immigration reform is not popular in this heavily conservative state, which followed Arizona’s lead and passed a tough crackdown on illegal immigrants two years ago. An anti-immigration group, Numbers USA, began airing a radio ad in February that demands, “Who elected Graham to demand amnesty and welfare for millions of illegal aliens?” Since then, his approval rating among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has dropped from 72 percent to 58 percent, according to the Winthrop Poll. A pro-reform group that put up a statewide television spot to give Graham political cover doesn’t even mention immigration, suggesting that even the bill’s advocates see it as a tough issue to explain.

This is a somewhat fawning piece on Graham. Graham needs to be pounded as much as possible before the primary to weaken him. Conservatives need to get under his skin because he's naturally a very arrogant and vindictive man (remember when he said "shut up, just shut up" when we destroyed Harriet Miers nomination?)

Immigration reform isn’t popular because of common sense. Someone has to foot the bill for them every time they come across the border and as a majority they don’t pay in anywhere the amount of taxes that American citizens do, if at all. If you not mind relatives coming to stay eith you and staying indefinitely I guess it’s for you but I don’t know many that do. This amnesty for illegals is utter BS to benefit the politicians only. Otherwise it provides absolutely no benefit to the average American citizen, only business owners who are fined or even arrested if they employ them.

I'm sure he would quite enjoy that.

Let me expand on that moment a little. I have met many Americanized Hispanics that are very hardworking people that pay their taxes and have assimilated into our culture that are genuinely good people that I attend church with and talk to pretty regularly. They pay into the “system”, own homes, and have children that attend schools and speak English and are part of our culture. They are not here for all the “freebies”. They are are respectable. I have absolutely no problem with them and many are good friends that I trust. The illegals; they are quite different for the reasons mentioned and there is a distinction.

graham is an uber progressive gaylord... and the sooner his voters admit this to themselves, the sooner America can be rid of his plague on our party.

A strong conservative opponent can blow him away. South Carolina is a state where you can run as a conservative. A Jim Demint type candidate would destroy him.

The remarks are most certainly racist. They were uttered by someone who is not politically correct. Anything he says at all, anything he thinks or any lack of speaking or thinking is by that fact RACIST!

Hey Susan, get a clue. That was a million political years ago. Linda went over to the dark side some time ago. If you want a "strong Repiblican," check out Cruz. Compare his record with Linda's.

1. Please help us oust him. Takes more than just criticizing us.

2. Not my party.
