It’s all a setup. He is part of the larger effort to let O’Backdoor out of the closet. They trickle these supposedly closeted gays out and crucify anyone who dares to object. When we turn the other cheek enough times, O’Backdoor will triumphantly step out into the light of his gayness, thereby cementing his anti-Godly status forever. How cute this all is!
That was my first thought too.
And if no team hires him, he can now file a discrimination suit against the NBA, since he's in a "protected" class.

CArolyn Moos dated him for 7 years and had no idea he was gay? Maybe he’s gay like Anne Heche.
Personally, I think this is a fading mediocrity looking for one more big score who thinks he can get it by proclaiming himself to be “gay” (since in PC World, gays are the cool people, after all) and if it doesn’t work, he can sue someone and make almost as much as he’d make on a new contract.
