The point you missed in bringing up alcohol is that if pro-drug-war zealots believed their rationalizations, they'd be warring with equal vigor against the deadly addictive mind-altering drug alcohol.

Alcohol is part of the cultural inheritance from the people who founded the country and was legal when I was born. Thus I inherited alcohol as part of my culture even though I don't drink. But I do remind people to take care when they go drinking, if that makes you feel better.

Mandatory minimums that let’s judges go light on the violent but can’t exercise any discretion with non violent drug offenders. The constant lowering of our privacy expectations.

I've restored that post (above) to the context; it was not "pro-drugs" and in fact had nothing to say about the effects of alcohol or other drug use, but only about the negative effects of criminalizing drugs - negative effects I'm sure he'd agree applied equally to the war on alcohol aka Prohibition.
