A few hours ago at the Arclight theater in Hollywood, director Neill Blomkamp showed off a rock-em-sock-em trailer for his new sci-fi epic Elysium, followed by an even more revealing ten-minute clip reel but if he'd had his druthers, he'd have shown nothing at all. "I try to show as little as I can," he told reporters afterward. "The thing is, if you're a responsible, functioning filmmaker in the 21st century, you can't spend a hundred million dollars and then try to behave as though you're going to keep [the movie] wrapped under a blanket I realize that you have to get it out there."
Blomkamp will start untucking that blanket tomorrow when the trailer for Elysium debuts online, and it'll give audiences a taste of the bracing, brawny, brainy movie that today's footage seemed to showcase: an action film with a whole lot on its mind, similar to Blomkamp's feature debut, the Best Picture nominee District 9, but realized on an even bigger scale. The director describes Elysium (out August 9) as "a science-fiction take on the haves and have-nots and the separation of wealth," and Matt Damon stars as one of those have-nots, a former car thief living in a slummy future Earth studded with smoking skyscrapers while the pristine space station Elysium looms up above, a beautiful paradise for rich one-percenters that's patrolled by a severely ponytailed Jodie Foster.
After a factory accident leaves Damon so irradiated that he'll only live five more days, he realizes that the sole cure to his condition can be found on the technologically advanced Elysium. With the help of characters played by Wagner Moura and Diego Luna, then, Damon is grafted into a brawny mech suit resembling Sigourney Weaver's power loader from Aliens...

I think there’s a really good chance that Matt Damon could be acting, and I think that’s the really scary thing.
What if the businessman was just middle-class or poor, then would it be wrong? BTW District 9 was not only vulgar, but stupid.
This movie sounds like a SciFi version of what happens on our border all the time. Perhaps it's more about illegal immigration, than the income inequality derived by Democrat political policies?
Won't help irrational idiots - who have to vocalize their hatred for America - make money off of their idiocy.
That’s the first thing that popped into my head: District 9 was a retarded film that I wouldn’t be proud of being involved with.
I’m a movie guy......I’ve seen more movies then anyone I know.I don’t care about the politics of the actors...heck I know there liberal.....
That said Sci FI kinda sux lately. I couldn’t finish Prometheus....District 9 was lame. Maybe I’ll watch the remake of Total Recall on blueray. I trust the judgment of the folks on IMDB . This forum let’s their politics get in the way of a movie.
The movie sounds like a rip off of several other movies. Right of the top of my head The Elysium is the name of the ship in the movie “Pandorum”
District 9 did introduce me to Sharlto Copley who played a great “Murdock” in The A-Team movie. I’d like to see more of him.
“I trust the judgment of the folks on IMDB.”
I use IMDB as well. There are real movie fans there, not “professional” critics.
Sometimes you have to weed out the 12 year old film school wannabe trolls, though.
The director describes Elysium (out August 9) as "a science-fiction take on the haves and have-nots and the separation of wealth...."It's already been done.
I found it boring. I could watch the first third.
The Left in this country is truly ill. And fanatical.
Yes, because I and many others like me will not support the careers of damn Hollyweird Communist slime just for the sake of a little entertainment. The reason people like Damon open their filthy sewer holes in the first place is that they have legions of people who are willing to shell out hard-earned money to see their movies, enriching and empowering them to spew their CommieLib rot.
Entertainment is temporary, but the ideas being pushed by the Hollyweird elites, like Damon, are permanent. I, for one, will not support the career of anyone who is actively seeking to end what made America great.
Once again, I'll beat the "we need a conservative/patriotic pop culture" drum. We have to figure out a way to counter the likes of Damon, Maher, Morgan Freeman, Jamie Fox, et al, through the media younger Americans will accept -- movies, reality TV, music, video games and professional sports -- or we will lose our nation. Think things are bad now? Just wait 'til Generation.com is in charge, and we're too old to do anything about it.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I caught Total Recall for free at a company outing. It was worth every penny that I paid to see it.
Mediocre at best. Though, Kate.Beckinsale can always hold my attention. ;-)
Who needs looney conspiracy theories like commercial airliners laying down chemtrails to deliberately poison life on the surface of this planet, when chemrails are so obviously in the future, and are down here on the slumy surface already (in the future).
Skimming through the vulture article, and another interview, it appears the filmaker wants to talk politics by fictionally hinting around, trying at the same time to sell some futuristic action flic, but bear no responsibility whatsover for any fallout concerning either ideas he's promoting, or trashing. That way, he gets to be a capitalist and get rich, live the good hollyweird life, be seen and think of himself as ultra cool, sophisticated and "with it", and trash-talk the same system that allows for making stupid movies that stupid people pay money to watch in the first place, all the while showcasing the have-nots being justified in taking "health care" by force, forcing others to pay for it all, even if somebody has to be kidnapped and have their identity stolen. Everybody wants to be rich. What a system.
I do hope this movie crashes and burns. And somebody steals his car. And his own ID. Let that be out on loan for a while.
