SEN. PAT TOOMEY: I’m a gun owner, and the rights that are enshrined in the Second Amendment are very, very important to me personally, ..... I don’t consider criminal background checks to be gun control. I think it’s just common sense. If you pass a criminal background check, you get to buy a gun, no problem. It’s the people who fail a criminal or mental health background check that we don’t want having guns.

I would cut yourself some slack. Toomey probably was a solid conservative but I think he has been seduced by that Washington wheeler dealer elitist mentality that has afflicted so many establishment Republicans. There is a chance he could be convinced to recant and return to solid Constitutional principles. He will be there for some time so he needs a constant series of reminders of why he was selected.

Actually, I would make this compromise, let them “expand” checks a little. In return, do away with the Gun Control Act of 38. If you pass the check, buy what you will. Full auto, silencers, whatever, as long as it ain’t crew served. Maybe even then, to a degree, Ma Duce, for example.

We need to see the fine print on this one.

First, a check would be OK if NO records were kept. Do I trust the government not to keep records? Probably not.

Second, one should not be able to be declared mentally unfit on the word of a mere doctor or shrink, but should have to be added to the “no-buy” list by a Judge in a Court, with the opportunity to present your case. Do I think this bill requires a Judge’s order to declare a citizen mentally unfit? Probably not.

Do I think a Judge can be trusted to do the right thing in all situations? Probably not.

Therefore, the whole thing STINKS.
