The Book of Revelation simply gets it wrong; failing the test of prophecy, Revelation cannot correctly be called prophecy. Revelation was written in the First Century A.D., and it seems to indicate the imminent demise of the Roman Empire, a victory for God's chosen in the battle of "Armageddon", led by our Messiah. After the victory of our Messiah, the Devil, false prophet and the anti-christ were thrown into the pit to begin a thousand year reign of the Messiah here on Earth.

At the end of the thousand years (which should correspond to the Eleventh Century), the Devil, false prophet and anti-christ are released from the pit to once again go out and seduce the inhabitants of the Earth.

A final war is waged against this "unholy trinity", in which the Messiah is once again affirmed and victorious. The dead are raised, while the Devil, false prophet and anti-christ are thrown back into the pit, along with all those who followed them, where they spend the rest of eternity removed from the presence of God in a lake of fire. The just, however, will spend eternity with God in eternal bliss.

Actually Revelation isn't a stand alone book. It's based on other prophecy, primarily the book of Daniel. The prophecies in both span thousands of years and various reincarnations of the Roman empire. For example:

Rev 17:7 But the angel said to me, "Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.
Rev 17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Rev 17:9 "Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits.
Rev 17:10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time.
Rev 17:11 The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition.
Rev 17:12 "The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.
Rev 17:13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.
