The greatest irony here is that those older arthritics fall into another group besides "most likely to file for disability". That group is "the Republican party". Here's how people in different age groups voted in 2012.

Why should Atlas just shrug when Atlas can go on disability?
He’s been pulling the welfare wagon long enough. Time to climb on and collapse it once and for all.
Here is Total 16 and over:
And here is the Total 16 and over less those over 65:
Yeah, there are people who exhaust their 99 weeks of unemployment and then hire a lawyer to get on disability.
There are also people who really try to get a job but cannot in the ObaMao economy who do the same.
Then, there are people who actually have a disability which prevents them from working . . .
It isn’t the older Pubbies (or Dems) that is causing the problem. It’s the able-bodied younger people who scam the system that causes the financial woes.
That doesn’t make any sense. SS Disability stops at age 65?
One cannot collect both SSI and SSDI at the same time, with one very limied exception.
The author is a complete idiot. He thinks the increase in disability recipients is because of the larger number of people reaching age 65.
A little bit of news for the dimwitted author—with relatively small number of exceptions, folks over age 65 applying for Social Security are awarded because they’ve reached the age of entitlement (actually it’s age 62) for aged benefits. These people do not need to “prove” or even allege they have a disability, just prove their age.
It’s the younger people who have not reached the age to be eligible for “aged Social Security benefits” that apply for Social Security disability.
These idiots are wearysome!
That’s what I thought. BTW, what is the one very limited exception?
if you have worked for enough quarters to qualify for SSDI but did not make enough to be paid the current in Fl $710 SSI pays then SSDI pays you what you have earned and SSI pays you the balance to make $710
The only exception is for an individual who took early retirement through Social Security, which is possible at 62, before being approved for disability benefits.
Gotcha, thanks. That makes sense. The author of the article makes none at all, for the reason we’re discussing. People over 65 do not get SSDI.
