Conservatism has something to do with community, especially local community. It’s mainly at that level that people will deal with disasters, not as lone individuals. Obviously you want a few weeks of supplies on hand to get through the acute period, but this hard core prepper stuff where you’re able to stay in your hidey hole for a year makes no sense for the vast majority of people.
I’m not preparing for an economic collapse because I don’t think there’s going to be an economic collapse, at least not that’s accompanied by full societal collapse as you doomsdayers predict. I think today’s doomsdayers are wrong just like yesterday’s doomsdayers were wrong. The doomsday tendency is in all of us — it’s probably part of our innate survival wiring — and a certain percentage of people in every generation will get carried away with it regardless of circumstances.
Or then again you could be completely wrong about my motivations.

Plus, as we researched it, you can often get large quantities of some medications, like a year’s worth or by bulk packages.
And for some stuff, it’s actually cheaper than our RX plan with the co-pay.
