What Makes a Good Bug-Out Location?
The Shooters Log ^ | 3/23/13 | CTD Blogger

Posted on 03/23/2013 12:53:07 PM PDT by Kartographer

I’m going to tell you a true story, but to protect my friend’s privacy and OPSEC—as all good preppers should do—I’m going to remain as anonymous as possible. I’m telling you because I believe in helping people and I like to imagine a world after SHTF where we help each other rather than hinder each other, so here it goes… I recently had the opportunity to visit a friend’s bug-out property. What started out as a dream for land outside of the city for a nice get-away to keep animals and a shooting range turned into the perfect place to start a bug-out plan in motion.

Oh boy -- "wishing your deaths?" /roll eyes

Meanwhile it's you guys who post epic length fantasies about how the non-prepper "cretins" will die.

Why do you hate me?

Is it because I nailed Rick's wife?

So you sympathize with this prepper SHTF stuff?

They think the country is doomed, that its best days are over, that it’s time to make plans to bug out and watch it burn.

You want your forum full of escapist, defeatist stuff like that?

So SHTF is now a snow storm?

Absolutely!

Funny how you guys always define SHTF down whenever we have these little chats.

Blame the CDC, who has invoked the concept of the Zombie Apocalypse to get people to prepare for, among other things, snow storms.

I don’t mind you quoting me, at all. If he still doesn’t get it, it looks like the boss has made it clear ;)

Maybe there is the fifth type; I'll call it 'The Governor' Someone who survives the initial SHTF fan event even thought they never cared or even possible hated preppers and who goes on to become a manipulative SOB with a room full of fish tanks containing the heads of his enemies? Now who on this thread fits that type? ;-)

Do you have any insurance policies at all?

Car insurance, death insurance, fire insurance, theft insurance, ANYTHING?

If so, then: Why are you convinced that you are doomed -- and do you want to be an escapist and defeatist like that???!?

Me. Definitely me.

If only because then I'd get to hit it with that hot Andrea chick.

I, for one, would like to thank you very much for your posts, and so graciously allowing me on your threads, since I found FR, just over a year ago. I've learned a lot from you, others and the articles.

It's sad that some just don't turn the channel if they don't like the content.

Thanks Jim. And thanks for the forum. If without this site I would have never been able to help so many people.

FK yeah it is. I live in Greenville, Delaware down the street from Joe Biden. His home was my one mile marker on my morning run.

Anyway, I got stuck in the storm of 96. A once in century storm. Couldn’t go anywhere for three days.

DelDot didnt’ have the resources to cover that storm.

Luckily I had ample supplies of everything, including candles which came in handy when the electric went out for two days. I even shared with the couple next door, who being from Chile, thought you could always get anything, anytime in America.

They had no food, no flash lights, no candles etc.

Cooked em dinner for three nights, learned so much about Chile, that it became one of my favorite destinations.

two years later another storm hit. Not as bad but, every road out of town was uphill and absolutely covered with snow.

Stayed home for a day.

Still there were a couple of times when I lived in Oklahoma. Nearest neighbor? 1.5 miles. Got snowed in, roads flooded and the bridge taken out twice in ten years.

No problemo. We farmed and always had stores. Plenty of Popcorn too. My favorite food.

Still, another time the road I lived on, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, had a mud slide on side and two downed redwood trees on the other.

If you’ve ever seen a redwood tree then you know these things ain’t small. So my brother, myself and neighbor decide to cut our way through both trees, enough so cars could get through.

Took our chainsaws, coffee and can do spirit to the site. Took two days and my Mom kept us feed for brunch, lunch and dinner.

At it as sun up and didn’t stop til sundown. Kept the wood for our fireplaces and my Mom’s husband split and stacked most of it for us.

Still, there were two floods that nearly took our home and left us stranded for about a week.

And others where I’ve walked off into the wood for a hike and not paying attention found myself miles from where I had intended and just hunkered down.

I’m a country boy and can skin a buck and spit some Beechnut in your eye(not really, can’t stand the stuff anymore)

I’d advocate three months for most people. It’s very easy to underestimate what you need and it’s also good to help others.

I have three months in my house and six months spread among three Public Storage. Also, have two friends who let me drop some stuff at their place if I need to bug out to them.

My thing. Your mileage may vary but, I hate not having stuff when I need it.

As far as a few weeks? There a story posted today about the condidtions that many of Sandy’ victims are still living under 5 months later.

Excellent point. Even in the midst of civilization, planning ahead for the "unexpected" is a very good idea.
