85yr. old Austrian, Lived Under Hitler, Says We’re Screwed

What I am about to tell you is something you’ve probably never heard or will ever read in history books.

I believe that I am an eyewitness to history. I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We elected him by a landslide – 98% of the vote. I’ve never read that in any American publications. Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took Austria by force.

In 1938, Austria was in deep Depression. Nearly one-third of our workforce was unemployed. We had 25% inflation and 25% bank loan interest rates.

Farmers and business people were declaring bankruptcy daily. Young people were going from house to house begging for food. Not that they didn’t want to work; there simply weren’t any jobs. My mother was a Christian woman and believed in helping people in need. Every day we cooked a big kettle of soup and baked bread to feed those poor, hungry people – about 30 daily.

You could revise that a bit and set it to that youtube thing with Hitler ranting.

Yes, hardly anyone doesn’t know that he and Stalin and Hirohito and Mussolini were responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

Not everyone gets the lesser details of their lives accurate.

Agreed 100%. I’m 63 and see it from a slightly longer perspective of time. The rate of fall is increasing dramatically, and the sudden stop at the bottom, is going to be fatal to the country. Another 4yrs of 0scumbag&Co, and we just won’t be able to reverse the damage.

“...draw the inevitable conclusion that they are somehow gods.”

Same today.

I blame Rush etc, for using “immaculation”, “messiah”, “the won/one” etc etc etc when they talk about 0scumbag.

I know it’s sarcasm, but they should be deriding and criticizing and denigrating him and his thugs at every chance they get, instead of using those religious terms.

Some people actually believe those religious terms apply to 0scumbag&Co.

He a fake, fraud, marxist, muslim, racist etc and people should be told.

Germany was having trouble,
What a sad, sad story;
Needed a new leader to restore
Its former glory.
Where, oh, where was he?
Where could that man be?
We looked around, and then we found
The man for you and me!

And now it’s...
Springtime for Hitler and Germany;
Deutschland is happy and gay!
We’re marching to a faster pace,
Look out, here comes the master race!

Cuz now it’s
Springtime for Hitler and Germany,
Rhineland’s a fine land once more!
Springtime for Hitler and Germany
Watch out, Europe, we’re going on tour!

Obama was elected because the Republicans picked a loser.

I think the military is generally a good “sorter” of men, because they test the mettle in a variety of ways in order to figure out where each person would be best put to use.

If that is so, then whence the expression: "salute the rank, not the man"?

I don’t know, but I just think that if Hitler had displayed some brilliant leadership abilities, especially during wartime, he would have rose higher than corporal. The military is a bureaucracy though, so it follows that the Peter principle is in effect there too, and maybe people end up one rank above where they would be most competent, and hence your aphorism.

Stalin, Hirohito, Mussolini, Khrushchev, and Hitler were all pikers in the mass murder business compared to the People's Champion Mao ... at 76,702,000 ...

Murdered by Stalin: (1917-1987) 61,911,000;
Murdered by Hitler: (1933-1945) 20,946,000;
Japanese by murder: 10,000,000 (mostly Japanese males and their families resisting military service, but not counting murders in China and SE Asia, Pacific Islands);
Khrushchev some 3,000,000 (Ukrainians by starvation);
Mussolini a handful of thousands.

It is interesting how most revile Hitler for his mass murders, but ignore Stalin and especially Mao for far worse ...

BTW: in perspective - Combat deaths in all wars between 1900 and 1987, including World Wars I and II, Vietnam, Korea, and the Mexican and Russian Revolutions is 34,100,000.

I used to wonder how any population could elect such a monster. Today I know.

I was interested to read further down the text. Fancy believing something for umpteen years and then seeing it rebutted? The lady says that "everyone thinks that Hitler rolled in with tanks and took Austria by force" (rough translation). So did I.

I checked via Wikipedia and found that there was a phebliscite. This being a straight question to the people. By then the Nazis were in power and counted the votes. 99.7 percent favouring the Nazi rule. I find it hard to discount that the Nazis did not roll in with force, I do not know for certain, needs more research. The figures of the phebliscite do tell of a majority vote for National Socialism. That is the surprise. This was stated in the text, but the vote did not take place before the Nazis arrived. They counted the votes.

On a historical note, the Austrian Nazis had attempted a coup in 1934. Ten of them broke into the chancellors residence and murdered Englebert Dollfus (1892-1934). The Austrian government tried and hanged all ten. Somehow when the Nazis finally gained power in 1938, they were said to have destroyed statues of Dollfuss.

I found that when the new Austrian chancellor attempted to have a referendum on the matter of autonomy, a coup took place. This was by the Austrian Nazi Party. That party then delivered the permission for Germany to come in with troops. The article posted then is accurate in saying the Austrians did vote overwhelmingly for the Nazis. Only that the real culprits were the Austrian Nazi Party, in first allowing the entry of German troops.

The Austrian people only voted on an accomplished fact.
