his State of the Union address, President Obama doubled down on his gun-control proposals, again demanding that Congress ban so-called assault weapons and high capacity magazines. This is not a surprise. What has been a surprise are the increasingly open calls for defiance from gun owners, state legislatures, and local law enforcement. If the presidents proposals become law, he may move the country into turbulent waters we havent seen in many years.
Gun control has long been a controversial issue in American politics. However, there are three aspects to this issue that make this more volatile than other hot topics such as taxes, foreign policy, or abortion:
1) The strongest advocates of each side hold fundamentally irreconcilable positions.
On one hand, committed gun-control advocates say: No one should be allowed to own certain weapons. On the other hand, equally committed gun-rights advocates say: No way in hell are we giving up these weapons.
2) Ordinary Americans have declared their willingness to disobey the law.
New York state has already passed laws similar to Obamas proposals. Gun owners there are now organizing a campaign of open civil disobedience, daring state officials to come and take their rifles. State officials already acknowledge that they will be unable to enforce the new law.
3) Local law enforcement officials and state governments have also vowed civil disobedience.
Over 280 sheriffs and eight state sheriffs associations have vowed to protect citizens Second Amendment rights against new gun laws.
The Utah Sheriffs Association used unusually strong language:
We, like you, swore a solemn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and we are prepared to trade our lives for the preservation of its traditional interpretation.
Similarly, several state legislatures are considering laws to stop federal officials from enforcing new gun laws

I’m with you Max. I am also an old guy who will not give up.
This post is not directed at anyone in particular on this board. I do direct this post to those who desire to take away the rights of the people granted by God, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
That's precisely what the battle to create the Constitution was about. How to control the federal government so it wouldn't abuse its citizens. The brightest minds in human history couldn't contain the beast. The thirst for power among a few is too great even for hundreds of millions to contain.
I can see that happening too. Not all Americans are as herdable as the rest of the world, some are downright ornery when pushed. A large number would fight UN troops, but some would run to greet them with open arms. The later would likely swing from a pole too.
People in the creepiest hellholes in the world 'get to vote'. Their elites - like ours - need to have their fat egos fed. What better way than the vote? Saddam Hussein claimed 98% of the vote. The creepy fat one in North Korea loves the vote - it allowed the shit to think he was loved. Same with the thugs in Iran.
It's not 'this elite' or 'that elite'... who cares? One group's as corrupt as the other.
The only thing we ( we the people) want from the puffed up 'used car salesmen types' in Washington DC is for them to protect the freedoms that matter to us: the freedoms granted by our Constitution. Freedoms that protect our rights as citizens. OUR freedom is based on the Constitution and the BILL OF RIGHTS. That's what 'we the citizens' are willing to die for.. Willingly.
That freeodom is the reason people of the world want to escape to our country. So THEY can be free from their puffed-up - lowlife - elites. The protection of citizen's rights.
Would I be willing to die to defend a bunch of elites? NO. I wouldn't be willing to get a bad cold to defend a bunch of elites. I wouldn't be willing to cross a street to defend a John Kerry. I wouldn't spend a nickel to defend a bunch of puffed-up liberal elites - OR ANY elites for that matter. Like you, this will be done for our children and grandchildren.
There are about 10 million big game hunters in the United States. By nature of what they hunt they are using rifles that are perfectly suited for sniping.
Ha-ha! Check out my "Bambi" comment towards the bottom...here.
i AM 70....I swore to protect the constitution, and our rights to bear arms against tyranny......my battle cry is molon labe!
>>It isnt the cops well be fighting. Its those giving the illegal orders...
Our rights have eroded steadily for decades, and that has accelerated in the last 10 years to the point where the government can, and does already, do ANYTHING it wants, with impunity.
Why don’t you post some links to all the stories about internet/armchair warriors like yourself that have risen up and taken back our rights? Can’t find any stories like that? Big surprise.
You are exactly the kind of person I am talking about - tough guy on the internet that is going to rise up and save the country, as soon as things get bad enough....problem is, things never actually get ‘bad enough’ to get people (including me) off the couch and do anything because its easier to rollover and go back to living your life. Its happening already - if you plan on being a hero, what are you waiting for? Oh yea, I know, you are just laying in wait for the right opportunity.....
Where was the masses of resisters the last time assault weapons ban was passed? where was the citizens militia when machine guns were banned? where were all the internet/armchair warrirs when the TSA started feeling up your wife and daughter in order to get on a plane? Where was the armed resistance when the supreme court ruled that police no longer need a warrant to search your house? Where was the action when Obama declared he had the right to issue kill orders on American citizen on his word alone?
It’s not going to happen, my armchair-warrior friend, no matter how much tough talk you can type.
Who is alive today that has the Divine acumen the Framers did? I would posit no one.
I wouldn't trust any man alive today to rewrite an already perfect document.
Can you imagine the "compromise" that would occur in a re write?
Again, the Constitution is all but ignored now, why would a new one be any different?
We need to enforce what we have, not re write it.
I agree with the points you bring up regarding where we are as a Nation, just disagree with your approach to fix it.
Our current form of government and the original Constitution is fine. Where things have gone wrong is that corrupt men seek to exert unlawful control over those they are supposed to serve simply out of a perverse desire for power.
Restore what once was with a few newer things left in and things would be vastly improved. Simply removing the powers and authorities the government has taken outside of the Constitution would be an alternate solution.
Unfortunately Congress won't do that by themselves.
JMHO
Watch Colorado.
We seem to be poised to implement at 15 round magazine limit.
Expect widespread non-compliance.
Expect Magpul to move to Wyoming.
My apology for butting in.
153 years to be precise. A Louisianan should know that.
To paraphrase N. Pelosi..”we will have to pass the new revised Constitution to know what is in it”
I remember when the Founding Fathers quit without even trying because the Tories were saying bad things about them. If someone calls you a bad name then the thing to do is surrender and cry about it.
You are correct; however, those giving the orders will likely NOT be those executing the orders. So any police deemed to be “friendlies” will be in the front lines.
