You can read all about McCarthy's faults in liberal biographies such as David M. Oshinsky's A Conspiracy So Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy (New York: Free Press, 1983) and Thomas C. Reeves' The Life and Times of Joe McCarthy (New York: Stein & Day, 1982), and all of this information is probably true. However, a great deal of information vindicating McCarthy has come out since these books were published. This new information includes the declassified Venona files and KGB documents, scholarly volumes by experts such as Harvey Klehr and John Earl Haynes, and published memoirs of those involved such as Soviet spymasters Pavel Sudoplatov and Aleksandr Feklisov.

Given the dominance of leftists i.e. communists and libs in the media even in those days, it’s no wonder McCarthy was treated as an ogre. He was rash, and he even a lot of moderate Pubbies were glad to see him gone. Nevertheless, he did the country a great service.
