Lee freed his slaves. He urged Blacks should be recognized in the Army of the Confederacy, He was loved by both blacks and whites. Had the south won—I feel he would have been elected to the presidency of the CSA and he would have freed the slaves in a humane and gentile way—today he would be a hero to all blacks. Jackson too fought to give black children Sunday school—teaching it himself when it was illegal! He believe God laws was greater than any state law.

Lee freed his slaves.

He was required to free them under the terms of his father-in-law's will. He was allowed to keep them for a maximum of five years. He held onto them as long as the will permitted, eventually freeing them in 1862 in compliance with the will.

He urged Blacks should be recognized in the Army of the Confederacy,

He argued that without supplementing the thinning ranks of the Confederate army with slaves, the Confederates would not have sufficient forces to hold their remaining territory. For him it was a matter of practical necessity, not a noble undertaking.

He was loved by both blacks and whites.

That's somewhat of an exaggeration. He was certainly the best-loved Confederate officer among Northern whites.

Had the south won—I feel he would have been elected to the presidency of the CSA and he would have freed the slaves in a humane and gentile way—today he would be a hero to all blacks.

First of all, the South could not have won the war after Antietam.

But even if they had, Lee's own letters state that slavery was the natural state of African people in the US. He preferred, and contributed to, groups that advocated colonization of freed slaves.

Nothing he wrote or said contemplates a South where blacks and whites would be free and equal citizens. In his mind, the alternatives were slavery or voluntary colonization.

That being said, I do not believe that lee would have run for office.

A political career seems out of character for him.

Jackson too fought to give black children Sunday school—teaching it himself when it was illegal!

That will need to be sourced.

He famously as a teenager taught a slave he knew how to read in exchange for the slave gathering firewood for him.

He believe God laws was greater than any state law.

I'm certain that he did, given his devout nature. That being said, I'm unaware of Jackson writing or saying that educating slaves was part of God's law.

How many black students did he have at VMI?
