I always wonder if this comparison makes sense. After all, there are a lot more Americans in Chicago than in Afghanistan. In fact you are more than 25 times as likely to be killed as an American soldier in Afghanistan, than as a person in the city of Chicago. If you live in Chicago and are not in a gang, then it is closer to 100 times as dangerous to be a soldier in Afghanistan. And if you live in Chicago and are white, it is more than 500 times as dangerous to be serving in Afghanistan.
The important thing is to look at the subgroups. If you look at Chicago minority males in the 15-25 age group, then it’s probably just about as dangerous to be one of them as it is to be as oldier in Afganistan.
