The problem with this notion is that the New Testament does not really give any cover for Christians to disobey or rebel against their government, except insofar as they are obligated to disobey them when commanded to do something against God's commands.
And the Roman Empire was a good deal more oppressive than the US government of today. Haven't noticed any public crucifixions or feeding of dissidents to wild animals recently.

god allows for personal self-defense and the defense of others. there is no duty to allow others to take away that god-given right, they cannot lawfully do that since God gave you and everyone that right, not government. self defense predates all forms of human government.
