In spite of how they often may get on my nerves, I tend to like and enjoy the company of “hicks”. Most of them tend to be honest and kind people, they just talk weird, and have some weird ways about them.(I’m related to LOTS of “hicks”, so I know this first hand)
CBS declared hicks were uncool in about 1970 when they started dropping top hit shows like the Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. There is a name for what they did: “the rural purge.” (readily googled and wiki’ed).
For some reason they started feeding us shows about people who lived in cramped apartments and basically just embarrassed and shredded each other with smart-ass comments.
Me? My role model is still Uncle Joe on Petticoat Junction.
Same here, and I agree. My “hick” relatives would drop everything to help a friend or family member. I remember once at a family gathering, I looked up and saw all but a couple of the men heading out the door at once. I asked mom what was going on, it seems the abusive ex-boyfriend of one of my cousins had shown up, and without even discussing it every man in the family, about 40 total, had gone out to confront the jerk! I would’ve loved to see his face when he ran into a human wall!
