We also know that when she showed up at Susan Blake's in Washington, she didn't know how to change a diaper.

From what I remember of the story it didn’t say she didn’t know how. She probably didn’t want to and was happy that her friend volunteered. My granddaughters who are about the same age she was in 1961 would let someone else do it too especially if it was a dirty one.
