"You will need WiFi to download the book you order but once you have it, you can go anywhere and read it." You don't need wifi to download a book with Kindle. You can use the USB cable for Kindle and likely the Nook also. Wifi downloads are convenient.
Getting non kindle ebook formats into the Kindle require that you use the USB cable.
