My dad used to watched LW faithfully.

He used to poke fun at him for being schmaltzy, but the older he got, the more he liked Welk.

Thx!

Got to see Thomas Dolby in concert at a very small venue last year. Looking around the room I thought-who are all these old people?

Time has flown...

So many of those supposed New Wave “1 hit wonders” had many MANY other great songs that could never make it to the top because of the sheer volume of great music at the time.

Men Without Hats, A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, Howard Jones..what a great time for music.

Yeah,,,, but he always had great musicians! But that clip I sent,,,, “One Toke Over The Line” is a famous pot-smoker’s song! Seemed incongruous, to say the least! Eh?

Amarillo--Tony Christie

1001 thanks to you! I don't think I've heard this song since I snuck a spare copy out of the station and then gave to my friend Marie.

Just, wow. Thanks again! R2z

Or maybe it was Neil Sedaka’s version. I have to go back to the video to remember those times clearly.

Here’s a quote from IowaHawk about the video:

“Awesomesauce: our pals JD McPherson & Jimmy Sutton (on bass) light it up on Letterman last night.”

I wore out Wireless back in the day and have gotten more into his stuff in the last couple years. There is something unique about how the Brits approach synth/electronic music.

I saw an interview with John Foxx (ex-Ultravox for those who don’t know of him) that said something like the Euros were not strapped with the legacy of the Blues/R&R as much as America and so their approach to music developed along a different path.

Makes sense in a lot of ways. But whatever, it works ;)

Gary Numan is another guy with a hell of a back catalog of interesting music. His later anti-christian stuff, well, I can do without the lyrical content, but the ‘sounds’ are awesome.

Wow-our tastes are very similar. Once numan went all anti christian I threw away all his stuff (and I was a huge fan)

Some of the bands in HS that we wrote on our folders:

Thomas Dolby
Men Without Hats
Eurythmics
Depeche Mode
New Order
Yaz
Blancmange
Thompson Twins
Duran Duran
Heaven 17
Human League
The Cure
A Flock Of Seagulls
The Fixx
INXS
Devo
Howard Jones

Newer versions of this type of music has been tough to find (Dolby's "Evil Twin brother" is awesome) but I do like some stuff from 009 Soundsystem. Give a listen to Speak to Angels and Trinity

I’m somewhat familiar with 009. Good stuff! And your list pretty much reads like one of my playlists ;) As a fellow 80s synthpop freak I suggest you get thee to YouTube and check out the BBC documentary “Synth Britiania”.

Also, check out the so called 80s revival groups. “Electric Youth” (Girl has an incredible voice), Kavinsky (french dude that does very John Carpenter’esque themed stuff), FM Attack, Lazerhawk, Outrunners, Paralells and College.

It’s like the 80s never ended. And these are mostly by musicians barely if at all born at the time. Seriously great stuff for people into the genre.
You can thank me later ;)

RE: Numan...

Like most I heard/loved Cars back when but only recently got into his Tubeway Army/Replicas stuff and was pissed I had missed out for so long. I still love everything up to and including Bezerker. But as he got into the whole athesim thing in later recordings, I just couldn’t separate it. The music is better than ever. But the whole 55 YO man railing at God thing ...nope.

I listen to a lot of music in Spanish, and in most languages tend to gravitate towards female singers. Some of my favs that most people wouldn’t suspect:

Early Shakira before she started singing in English, and more of a hip-hop/pop style.

“Pies Descalzos, Suenos Blancos” (music starts at 0:25)

“Estoy Aqui”

“Donde estas corazon?”

“Moscas en la Casa”

La Oreja de Van Gogh (Van Gogh’s Ear)
“Rosas”

“La Playa”

La Quinta Estacion
“El Sol no Regresa”
